NYATAPOLA TEMPLE

The temple of Nyatapola is situated in the courtyard of Taumadhi Square. It is the tallest and one of the most impressive temple of Nepal. The temple is dedicated to goddess Siddhilaxmi, who is represented as the manifestation of wealth in Hindu mythology. It was built by King Bhupatindra MaIla in 17th century. It is said that the king had himself carried the bricks for the construction of this temple. The stairway leading up to the temple is flanked by guardian figures of animals, humans and gods. it is believed that the elephant above the strong man standing on the front is ten times powerful then the man and it continues as depicted there. Only the temple's priests are allowed inside and is opened once a year. Nyatapola survived the earthquake in 1934 A.D. with minor damages to the ceiling of the fifth floor.
