Dhiki

Dhiki is a traditional Nepalese rice beater used in villages. The Dhuk Dhuk sound coming from the Dhiki early morning in rural settlements heralds the beginning of Nepali's main festival Dashain. This sound suggests that Chiura (beaten rice) for feast during Dashain is being prepared in Dhiki. This manual wooden thresher "Dhiki is made up of wood and works like lever. The framework consists of fulcrum having two pillars on each side, an effort area (where one of the person stands on the long thick plank of wood making effort at every interval), a long and thick plank of horizontal wood which has a small vertical extension that goes into a hole made on ground. It is in this hole that the grains or rice or dry chillies or various spices like turmeric are kept to transform them into powder. Two persons are required to operate a Dhiki, one presses the tail to raise the wooden lever and other sits in front to manage the grains.
