The temple of Tilrnadhav Narayan is believed to have been constructed in the 11th century and is one of the oldest temple of Bhaktapur. It is said that the temple was built by a man named Dharma Dutta Baniya. A devotee of lord Vishnu, Baniya was selling sesame seeds (Til) one day when he realized that on matter how much sesame seeds he sold they would never finish. He then inspected the vessel he kept his supply in and recovered an idol of lord Vishnu. Baniya used the money he made by selling sesame seeds to built the temple of Tilmadhav Narayan.
