After climbing the steep steps to Swayambhunath, one comes across a huge Vajra or thunderbolt at the top of the steps. The Vajra was established during the reign of King Pratap Mal la in the 17th century. Pictures of twelve different animals representing the twelve zodiac signs are carved on the Vajra. The gold plated Vajra was established to prevent ill omens and get of all evils.
