TALEJU AND MUL CHOWK

The eight-storied temple of Degu Taleju is located on the opposite side of the statue of King Yog Narendra Malta. On the back of this   Degu Taleju temple is the main temple of Taleju Bhawani. Inside the Taleju temple is an idol of Goddess Taleju Bhawani. This :temple is believed to have been built in 1661 A.D. during the reign of King Siddhi Narsingh Malla. The Mulchowk is one of the four historic courtyards within the Patan Durbar Square. The remarkable feature of Mulchowk is the array of excellent wood carvings showcasing the finest craftsmanship of Newari arts. There are 41 stunning struts carved with figures of gods and goddess and elaborately designed windows.

On the southern part of the courtyard is a three-storied pagoda style .temple guarded by two statues of the river goddesses Ganga and Jamuna. Every year during the festival of Dashain, the idol of Goddess Taleju Bhawani is kept in this temple and offered the sacrifice of goats, buffalos, ducks, etc. In the middle of this square there is another small shrine of Bidhya Mandir. From the eastern side of the Mulchowk, one can enter the Bhandarkhal Garden and Kamal Pokhari, the pond where the Malla queens used to take a bath.
