TALEJU BELL(LALITPUR & BHAKTAPUR)

LALITPUR

Inside all three palace squares inside the Kathmandu valley, one can observe huge iron bell in front of the Taleju Temple. These bells have been built in different periods of history by different kings to serve different purposes. The huge Taleju bell supported by two stout pillars was built by King Bishnu MaIla to please the goddess Taleju, the mother goddess of the MaIla Kings, in the 17th century. In the past, this bell used to be rung to notify about catastrophes and as part of worship rituals.

BHAKTAPUR

Located near the statue of King Bhupatindra Malla, there is a huge bell of Taleju. Similar bells are installed in the other two palace complexes of the Kathmandu valley. These bells had multiple use in the ancient time. They were tolled chiefly to notify the local people about important events, alert them about incoming disaster and to pay homage to the Goddess Taleju Bhawani. The Taleju bell at the Bhaktapur Durbar Square was built in the 18th century during the reign of King Ranjit Malla. To this day, this bell is rung every morning and evening at the time of the worship of Taleju Bhawani.
